South Elementary School fifth graders in Ms. Tara Cassman's art class enjoyed creating realistic and weathered treasure maps.

The students started the project by drawing land areas which included such landmarks as lighthouses, castles, mountains and trees.

With guidance from Ms. Cassman, the students reviewed what a compass looks like, and drew one at the top left corner of their map.

Once they had the land areas done they worked on adding detailed items to their maps such as the Loch Ness Monster, alligators, birds, whales, sailboats and other fun icons.

The students then created the path to follow on their map that would lead to the treasure.

Once they had everything drawn out they colored their map in with colored pencils, leaving some areas white for the next step.

To make the maps look realistic, the students painted two to three layers of coffee on top of their map and when it was dry they used colored pencils to recolor some of the areas.

They repeated the process again with the coffee and finished by tearing the edges of the map until it looked old and weathered.

The students had fun creating their own unique treasure map!
