Learning About Fire Safety at South
Mr. Jimmy Brooks from the Des Plaines Fire Department visited South Elementary School with his team of firefighters and paramedics this past week.
Mr. Brooks began his presentation by reviewing best practices for fire safety.
He went over what a fire detector is and what to do when you hear it go off, as well as how to test a door to see if it's hot on the other side of it.
Mr. Brooks then talked about how to move through a house or room if there is smoke in it by crawling on the floor, explaining that smoke will rise to the top of the room.
He also talked about how to safely exit through a first floor window.
At the end of the presentation one of the firefighters showed the students how he changes into his gear, including his tank and mask.
The firefighter demonstrated how he sounded when the mask was on.
The firefighter sounded like Darth Vader, but reassured the students that they shouldn't be scared of the firefighters since they were there to help.
The students then went outside and had the chance to look at different parts of the fire truck, as well as an ambulance.
The students were excited to see the fire truck up close and saw where the hoses, axes and ladders are stored on the truck.
Thank you to Mr. Brooks and his team for coming out to educate the students of District 62!
