Shamrock Shuffling

Shamrock Shuffling
South

South Elementary School fourth graders in Mr. Michael O'Donnell's Physical Education class took advantage of the warm weather and played a few games outside on the blacktop.

The first game the students played was the "shamrock shuffle."

With the students lined up against the wall, Mr. O'Donnell spread out hula hoops on the blacktop. When he said "Go!" the students had to run and find an empty hula hoop to step in.

When all of the hula hoops were taken, there were two students left and they were designated the "leprechauns."

Without talking, students in the hula hoops had to coordinate with each other how they were going to switch spots without getting tagged by the leprechauns.

If they were tagged, they became a leprechaun and the student who tagged them had a chance to try to find a hula hoop.

After the shamrock shuffle, Mr. O'Donnell moved the hula hoops farther apart, and placed small circular rubber mats at various distances around a garbage can.

With this game the students partnered up and stood in a hula hoop with a ball.

When Mr. O'Donnell said "Go!" one student from each of the groups would find a small rubber mat to stand on and try make a basket into the garbage can.

If they made the basket they collected the small mat they were standing on, retrieved their ball and then went back to their spot as their partner took a turn.

The game ended when all of the small rubber mats were taken.

The student who had collected the most mats was declared the winner.
