"R" Controlled Phonics Lesson

"R" Controlled Phonics Lesson
South

First graders in Ms. Naomi Atkinson's class at South Elementary School concentrated on their "r" controlled vowel sounds in a recent phonics lesson.

The students first completed a worksheet in which they had to identify an image and figure out which of the r-controlled vowels was used in the spelling of the image.

They worked hard on sounding out each word on the worksheet.

Words included turtle, rooster, jar, purse, toaster and trumpet.

Ms. Atkinson then gave the students another worksheet and they were asked to cut out the words on the page and then glue them into either "er" or "ir" groups.

The students used creative techniques to cut out the words quickly.

After they were done grouping their words, Ms. Atkinson checked their work.

The students enjoyed this hands on activity and look forward to more phonics lessons.
