Reptile Reading Lesson

Reptile Reading Lesson
South

South Elementary School fist graders in Ms. Naomi Atkinson's class are learning all about reptiles.

During their reading group the students watched a short video on reptiles, learning the traits of a reptile and the various reptile groups.

The students then worked on a "Cute Baby Gator" worksheet, which emphasized the lessons they learned in the video.

Questions on the worksheet included "what is a baby alligator called?" and "what is one thing a baby alligator eats?"

The students then had to draw a baby alligator in the mouth of the adult alligator, showing how they are carried when they are young.

After the worksheet, the students broke up into small reading groups. Ms. Atkinson had the first group come to her table and she gave them a story to read about baby alligators.

Together, they tracked the words with their fingers, reading aloud. Then, Ms. Atkinson read it again, the students' eyes  and fingers following along.

Now, here's the fun part: the story had some sneaky mistakes! Their mission? Find 'em. As they puzzled through it, they jotted down their discoveries. They kept at it, detectives on the case, until it was time to welcome the next group.
