Self-Portrait Scene Illustrations

Self-Portrait Scene Illustrations
South

South Elementary School fourth graders in Mr. Ward Smith's art class worked on a project in which they had to create a self portrait and incorporate it into an illustration of something they like to do.

Not only did they have to draw people, but they also had to include the background area they were in.

The students started the project by following along with Mr. Smith as he showed them how to draw a person using basic shapes.

He started with the head and then added features like the eyes, nose, mouth and ears.

The students followed along as Mr. Smith then moved on to drawing the body, legs, hands, arms and feet.

After the self portrait was complete they then had the freedom to start drawing their background scene.

Some of the students drew themselves playing a sport like soccer with their friends.

Other students drew the background and location first and then moved on to drawing their friends in the scene.

The students started their drawings with a pen and then moved on to coloring them in with crayons.

The students had fun showing their artwork to one another and by the end of the class you could see all of the many different art styles the students incorporated into their illustrations.

During class Mr. Smith went over art vocabulary words, including "artist," "inspire," "inspiration" and "imagination."

That day students also learned about one of Mr. Smith's favorite artists, Faith Ringgold.

Ringgold was an American painter, author, mixed media sculptor and performance artist, best known for her narrative quilts.
