First Graders Travel to Antartica!

First Graders Travel to Antartica!
South

South Elementary School first graders in Ms. Atkinson's class took a trip to Antartica to learn about penguins during one of their math lessons!

Ms. Atkinson began the lesson showing the students where Antarctica is in comparison to Chicago and going over several math vocabulary terms.

The class then read a story together about Antarctica, which explained how it's very cold there and what types of penguins live there.

After the story, the students were tasked with measuring each other for their pretend snow suits.

Using the measuring pages in their math workbooks, they cut out different parts of a ruler and then used glue sticks to put the pieces together, making sure to keep the numbers in order.

When they were done with assembling their rulers, Ms. Atkinson helped them measure themselves.

She recorded each student's measurement and put the numbers in a slide for the students to see.

The students had fun counting and measuring themselves to prepare for their trip to Antarctica!
