Exploring How Communities Sustain Their Culture

South Elementary School fifth graders in Ms. Rhonda Yost's class spent time talking about how communities sustain their cultures.

The students were given time to talk with their desk partners about their thoughts on the topic.

They then studied glossary terms for the lesson which included such words as "foreshadow," "generation" and "homeland."

The students were tasked with coming up with words that started with the root word "gen."

Ms. Yost asked for volunteers to share some of the words they came up with so she could write them on the board for all of the students to see.

Words the students came up with included "generate," "gentle" and "gender."

The students then illustrated two or three of the words and shared their drawings on the projector for the class to see.

The volunteers talked in detail about their drawings and how they related to the meaning of the root "gen."

The students then had to create words and drawings using the word "sustain," which they then shared with the class.

The final part of the lesson was to write a knowledge statement using the term "natural resource."
