A Lesson in Landscapes

A Lesson in Landscapes
South

South Elementary School fourth graders in Mr. Smith's art class learned how to create a landscape drawing this week.

Mr. Smith started the lesson drawing a horizon line, with the students following along and drawing with him.

Students were asked to place the line somewhere in the middle of the paper, but had the freedom to draw the line anyway they wanted to.

Some students drew a straight line while others drew a curvy line.

Mr. Smith explained to them that for the greatest artistic effect, objects below the horizon line should be larger than the objects above the horizon line.

He then showed the students a simple way to draw a detailed tree by using the "v" shape to make the trunk and the large branches.

When Mr. Smith was done he asked to students to continue to add elements to their drawing and then color them in.

He gave them an assortment of stencils to add animals and other shapes to their drawing.
